
Well, vulpines are as definitely on the canine branch of the carnivora tree as hyenas are on the feline. That's a fact. They merely did not move away so far from their common ancestor miacis, an arboreal small solitary predator.

I understand that chart but you have to remember that cats and dogs branched off from the same single(at the time) species as well so really they are all super distant cousins(and at the time I learned about them not knowing they didnt find the 'connection' yet), but it happens in alot of species, example the red panda of china is related to panda's yes (and very distantly) but they are more closely related to skunks, now picture a snunk next to a bear....XD My point is Foxes are now their own species so we shouldnt call them dogs.
