I was browsing a moment ago when I noticed that *28* guests were online, with one (hidden.) A couple minutes later, no new accounts, and only Elmind had actually been logging in... I'm guessing the "hidden" was a search engine crawler, but the rest is worrying. See attachment. Marked in green are searches being performed. Marked with yellow are attempted logins/registrations, views to the main page, help page and announcments.

This activity pattern is consistent with users arriving here, looking at the community "required reading", and registering. And yet we're never that active,  there's no new users, and all the guest signatures immediately disappear.

My guess is there's a bot going at us with an automated registration + fake user activity script that needs a good firewalling.

I wouldn't be worried about that. If they wanted to take this site done, believe me it would be down by now. It's not hard to overwhelm a server, much less a private (cheap) one like this one.

And the hidden account was most likely me or perhaps some other user. In your profile, you have the ability to hide your online status.

There is nothing that needs worked out with this issue since it hasn't been a problem (as far as I know), and even if there were a problem, there sure isn't anything we can do since we don't have administrative remote nor physical access to the server.

And if someone was DDoSing the server, it would have gone down by now anyway, and you can do so without even needing to visit the site to create strange guests. Also, this forum system keeps track of users every 15 minutes, so when you close the window or log off, you will still appear as online until the forum status resets again 15 minutes later.

So there isn't really anything to worry about anyway. Besides, I believe I (personally, I can't speak for Alynna or anyone else) am prepared for a defensive or counter-attack against the source (as well as prepared to take legal actions if necessary or applicable).

And it could just be search engine spiders indexing this forum anyway.
