Did anyone consider that karma might be a temporary point assignment that goes away after a while.  I think really it would be useful as an indicator to the quality of recent posts if each point had a time limit of after it was given.

The Karma system was very spoiled, and was giving headache, If you propose to change the script, I agree, if giving back the old system, I decline.

F*** the karma system, it was a bad idea that wasn't deliberately added, it just comes with the SMF software, and its gone now.

I was looking up as I was walking home and just realized how... huge everything is, everything but us, we're so small. But yet... I could almost feel it, the spark of life, the thread of fate, a bit of electric sizzle in the stars. I was reminded of death, and thereby of life. I felt alive. I think maybe, if I can just feel that for a moment every now and then, anything else that happens to me is O.K.

All I'm saying is it's done with and I'm glad. People were obsessing over it and it wasn't important or deliberate.

Seeker isn't trolling in hit post, Kitsunami. And I actually agree with that post.

I don't understand why there's so much fuss about that karma system really, which as Alynna mentioned was only a toy that came with the new forum software and was on because it's enabled by default. I thought it could be helpful to a point as well but in the end I think it's better without one really.

Maybe some alternative would be a user rating system like the Invision software has in the advanced profile setup, in which you can go in a user's profile and give a 1 to 5 star rating (like rating videos on Youtube works) if everyone still wants something similar to the karma system and if there is such a plugin for this board software.

 Smiley
"An indicator of the quality of recent posts"?
You're just being lazy.
I would not know why someone would need that. I mean, I check the forum every day, and I can see the quality of recent posts. And even if I don't read all the topics, I cann still see the quality of recent posts in the topics that I read. What interest do I have in any karma generated in the Drama corner when I read a deeply philosophical topic?
 Huh?
Besides, the main thing the karma system does is stall people from saying "unpopular" things out of fear for getting punished, while it won't stop people from ranting. It is a way to pass instant judgement. It disables the need to actually think before you make up your mind.
Sounds bad. -1.
Is this what you desire? Is this place not about trying to understand one another's views? Is it not contraproductive if there's such an alluringly easy alternative to thinking?
Is that what you truly want?

Ummm, negative karma didn't stop me from posting anything controversial.  Though I did sometimes keep from making a post that was basically just smiting.

 Hyper
But if you smite someone with words, you can give them a cause.
Also they will know for what post exactly they earned a smiting, or for what part in a page-long post.

Exactly. If it's more than a "no u" and you can explain why, you ought to say it. That's discussion and it's productive.

Are the 'yip' and 'growl' options part of the karma system?  Huh?
I don't know what they do, and I don't want to bother anyone by "growling" at them.  Shocked
The help section didn't seem to mention them either... fox_thoughtful

Lol yeah. We brought it back- and since this time were weren't in the middle of a sitewide flamewar, it hasn't been a problem.

Also, AFAIK, the person you growl or yip at can't see who or which post it was.

I seen something on another forum and thought to mention it here, in case anyone thinks this is a better idea:

A forum I'm on uses a reputation system, which is similar to the karma system on Kitsuhana. Each user can give another user one reputation point, which is either negative, neutral or positive, with a comment on why they gave it. You can always edit your reputation point for that user on their profile page, such as turning it from positive to negative and changing the comment. A user can also see a list with their points and the comments on their profile (eg. TheUser: -1: "This user is mean to people").

If such a plugin exists for this board, perhaps it could be an alternative. Not saying it's better or it should be replaced, but it would make more sense and be easier to use and manage.

     Wink
Nah, I think it's good as it is right now.
Leave it as it is, remove it all together, either way is fine.
But I don't think we need to put too much effort into it.
After all, this is a place of discussion, and not of evaluation.
