It's funny how most people who have more than a few tails seem to know NOTHING, where as people with a lower tail count are more apt to have actual knowledge (the only exception I've seen being Miss Kirara).
Well, I beleive my lover/mate Kazemei is also an exception, though her self-esteem is too low it admit it herself. She also has eight tails, but she gained them through several lives as a kitsune. Kazemei also has very high spirit power. She's just not as confident at managing it.

Personally, I have one tail, and I doubt I'll get many more considering I'm pretty much a half-breed kitsune... fox_thoughtful

     Wink
Heh, looks like I have seven tails after all.
     :P
Like the first pictures I drew of myself, back when I started believing in Inari for the first time.
     fox_thoughtful
    Is it odd?
I wanted to accept no more than one tail until I figured out just what they are.
As a result, I ended up with one tail and six wings.
     Huh?
And now that I believe in Inari once more, my tails return to seven.
    Hmm...

Well... as awkward as it sounds, in this life I started with five tails Shocked I may have only been aware of being a Therian since the start of 2010 but in the span of a year its influxed and decreased constantly, going from 5 tails to 3, 5,9,1,3,7,1,4 then went back to 7..... These weren't hallucinations nor any sort of falseness, they were there and I felt them as clear as day, constantly.

What my tail count is now (and has stayed that way) after coming to a realization/awakening just before the start of 2011, I will leave everyone to keep guessing.

Perhaps someone can also bring an answer to the odd tail case I went through? Still not clear with what had happened as a whole. Shocked

I'm beginning to wonder if the tail count is purely subjective. It not only varies rapidly for each person over a period of time, but their "animal" identity seems to vary just as wildly.

One thing that seems certain is that they are definitely not static things, they are constantly changing and flowing like water. It might be easier to ask if anyone has NOT had their tail count or animal identity change.

Is there anyone out there that has had the same count and animal associations for a long period of time?

Well, yeah. But that's only because at some point I realized that they are all a part of me, and I've accepted them all as what I call myself now. "Dark Fox" or "Patchwork Fox". Multiple parts patched togeter in resemblance of a fox.

The tails of a Kitsune are fascinating to me, even though I am not one myself. My apologies for intruding into the den of foxes. Please forgive this weasel.

But being Raijuu, I am in possession of 6 tails.

My tail count is thrown into the poll mix, but I won't reveal my tail count Smiley.

Though I've notice that asking the tail count of a kitsune you don't know a bit rude. There are some subtle ways of asking though :P.

Also Kitsune are not the only animals that have been know to have more than one tail. Some cats have been known for it as well. Along with the the racoons and such.

Someone else asked if my form has ever changed. nope, once I discovered I was a Kitsune it stick and did not change. For the most part, I stared out with just one tail (about 12 years ago.) That was fine and dandy, I thought that I was meant to only have one tail. Then later on I gained a second one which was a bit surprising... After that I grew more tails in more rapid succession over the past year or so.

OBTW, while Nekomata can have more than one tail, Tanuki never do.  Tanuki are measured by the number of rings on their tail.

What 9000?  Theres no way that could be right...  Shocked

ITS OVER 9000!!!  Shocked sorry couldn't resist! :P but did you know I some beliefs (chinese I think) that the god of Foxes have 10,000 tails? ...that's alot... Huh?

But actually I'm surprised you all don't know what the tails represent!  Shocked that was one of the first things I found out! so I'll be helpful and educate you all on what they are actually for. (no I'm not trying to be cocky  Wink )

As mentioned by someone before, tails are meant for balance, so I guess what your questions should be is, what do all these extra tails balance? well its simple, its the elements.

Haven't you even noticed you had an affinity to certain elements? and those with more tails more then one element?

I've always had an affinity to the woods, earth, water, and air and as time went by I gained more affinity to more elements.

Here is a basic example list of the elements they represent

    1 tail Original (physical/mental/spiritual) Balance
    2 tail Wood
    3 tail Earth
    4 tail Water
    5 tail Air
    6 tail Electrodes/Electrons
    7 tail Metal
    8 tail Fire
9 tail Void (control over empathy is the only way I can explain it its like a complete calm nothing to feel nothing else there)

Now its not necessarily in that order (although the first one is always the first one) That's just the order it has been for me, for other people it could be fire first and then earth and then metal *shrugs* I don't know I'm not them. This is all I've learned from personal experience.

What made me start noticing these things though was mostly when I was in high school,  Ive always had an affinity to the first 5 elements without much thought, course at the time I didn't remember I was a Kitsune yet, but after I remembered I realized that I was unconsciously learning those elements. But a little while before I remembered, for some odd reason I don't know why I but I kept getting electrical shocks! every thing I touched something be it metal, plastic, fabric, or people, Id static shock myself (and others) horribly, when It started to calm down is when I finally started to remember everything *the electricity probably jump started my brain XD, sorry I like to joke about that) and one day I decided to meditate and find out just how many tails I had which at the time was 6 with the 7th one almost nearly grown. I watched and after the tail finished growing I noticed I didn't have static issues anymore, if anything Ive been having 'luck' with electricity specially around electronic equipment.

When my 8th started growing somehow metal was much easier to bend....and break....I don't know how many metal objects I've accidentally broke be it spoons, spatulas, antennas, or just sheets/pieces of metal now I don't really have that issue, I know just how much force I need to do what I will with it, though this is within limits of course, I cant bend a 5 inch thick piece of metal!  Shocked

and the 9th well, that's still kinda growing, though at first even before it was growing Ive had problems after problems after problems with my empathy, though since the 9th started growing Ive noticed a major calm start to settle over me, I didn't get angry as much, and then later I could instantly just put myself into a type of mental void as I call it and not feel a thing, I can think clearly and plan and do things with persision (sp?) though I still do have my slip ups and frustrations (probably cause the tail isn't fully grown). That's also why I chose 9 tails instead of 8 cause even though I have 8 fully grown ones the 9th is still there its just not 'full' lol

Hmm, interesting theory on the tails. Though there are many many more elements than what you listed. It could be possible there are multiple elements tied to each tail.

Well what I labeled was the basic elements, the elements like light and dark I dont concider 'true' elements in a sense cause if you think about it all other sub-elements (as I call them) you can get by using or combining other elements for example Wind and Water will make Ice, Fire can make Light (the sun is just a burning flaming ball of gas) just like a lack of fire can make dark, lightning is made from electricity and so on and so forth so think of it in the sense that if you have the tails for wind and water you can also be comfortable with ice or in my case snow lol damn do I miss it  Sad

Some interesting fact  Busy : Did you know here in Louisiana if it snows even just a little they shut the city down? I mean there can be barely and inch or 2 there and everything is closed, I find it hilarious.... :P

    Hmmm...

Well, as you said the tails are in no particular order. And mind you we are no elemental creatures. The elements will not be directly tied to your tails, but it may be the other way around, after all, you are (likely) getting more 'powerful' as you get more tails, and it may be more of a part of the gained knowledge.

Electricity and Lightning are quite different though. They're like the opposite in the same spectrum. Lightning is fast, a shock, huge energy at an instant to the contrary of the much more constant, flowing if you will, electricity. LOL, even some anime do seem to get this point, lightning is more of a yellow, whereas electricity is tied to very bright, near white, blue. I expect other elements that are often put under the same banner, to have, likewise, big differences as well.

     Huh?
    Interesting approach, Pan.
     :P
But what about the elemental system I use featuring twelve elements in total?
     Hyper
The way I see it the elements are morel ike points we humans place on a sphere.
Theoretically, we can have an infinite number of different elements.
It's just the system we make up.
     Nerdy
Oh, and about electricity and lightning... I figured that one out.
You see, I used to be afraid of high-voltage power lines, they just made me feel uncomfortable...
Until I gave it some serious thought and figured out that the reason was that it felt like twisted lightning.
     Hyper
    And the it hit me.
Electricity... it's a combination of lightning and order, very close to fire and light.
    Heating and lighting...
Two of the main applications for electricity, right?
     Smiley
Since then I'm not quite that uneasy anymore around electricity.
Lightning is a yellow jagged bolt.
Electricity is a light blue static stream.
