Reasons tails are gained...

it is rather simple actually. Tails are gained due to life changing events, things that change how and what you know.
some times they are for reminders not to do certain things or not to live. I have one such tail i hide from others. what ever reason you got your tails is for you to learn and grow because of it.
to grow is to evolve to a higher level a different plane
a wish of enlightenment of my fellow kindred

I'm not sure I've had 3 life-changing events, though... <.<; And the cap is still 9.

I have 4, and i know only of 3, maybe 4 life changing events i've had over time. Which explains why i have them. i like my tails, and well, as an expression of knowledge or what have you, then well i'm about half way there. n.n

...wait. Maybe the reason I have 3 is because when i was born it caused 3 major shifts in the way things had been going....

total you know as to why you have them previous lives maybe things in this life you don't get one each life but if you meditate on each one you will find the answers will come to you. Has taken Cali three million years to gain 4.
The speed at witch you gain them is not in any way related to how good or bad a kitsune one is

If it's life changing events. Then whenever someone does something entirely new they should get one. Or when they accept something that they previously couldn't. So if you want to gain tails fast if life changing events are the way. Then a kitsune should seek out as many possible new experiences, new events, new lifes, heck even being a different species. If being human was enough to change their outlook in a significant way they would gain a tail just for that.

well events that are major events as the tails increase in number the more well major the events have to be.

*nods* Really major events with each event becoming more major than the last. Though Kuro that might mean it will take you longer to reach your next tail than it would take a three tail who had evolved them naturally to get to their fourth tail.
