Tails have long been symbolic for kitsune - the number of tails historically and traditionally representing the power of the kitsune.  The more tails, the more powerful the kitsune ....   Nine-tailed foxes (ky?bi no kitsune) are often thought to be the most powerful among kitsune, with the maximum number of tails.

A kitsune is said to gain tails as the kitsune grows in power... although some folklore states that kitsune may only grow additional tails after the age of 1,000 years (I personally, as a 350 year old kitsune with three tails, find assuming) ....     how a kitsune may actually grow in power differs, varying from performing deeds (if in service to a higher power, in the case of the my?bu or celestial foxes), energy feeding, experience, and maturity or (more commonly) a combination of many factors.

Some folklore also says that after a kitsune gains its ninth and final tail, it becomes all-knowing, all-seeing and all-hearing.    Some lore also claims the fur of the kyubi-kitsune becoming white or gold in color.

Powers that a kitsune may have or gain include forms of energy manipulation .... shape-shifting (transformation), invisibility, clairvoyance, clairsentience, teleportation, and other psychic and spiritual phenomena.

I wonder how methaphoric the multi-tails are... o.o
Does being reincarnated not mean that we have to start all over agian, with only one tail, or maybe even first having to earn that one tail?

Just some questions that came to mind when reading your post, Katsumi.

from my point of view the body and spirit are two different things. I also think that it might be possible to not see all your tails till you are ready for them. As your Current experiences catch up to your spirtial side. Now that can be rapid in your initial awakening or not.

Personally I see my self as havening two tails, but even if I am a child I know that I can have wisdom, intelligence and power.

I personally think the tails stay with a kitsune through a reincarnation, however I could be wrong.
I think a kitsune that has gained more than one tail could choose whether to physically manifest additional tails or not, as old woodblock prints, from what I have seen, tend to show one-tailed kitsune the most.
And I definitely think a nogitsune is more likely than a myobu to gain tails with age and experience, while a myobu is more likely to gain a tail after a particularly good deed, due to the difference in natures most commonly seen between the two types.

However, I will try to sound decently intelligent and to not pull stuff out of thin air. Do you care? Probably not, but sometimes I like disclaiming myself, even if it's unneccessary. I also like to ramble on about things a lot.[/size]

Tails can also represent family status; don't forget that!

My state of knowledge was that only Myobu could gain tails, as nogitsune simply were no moe than field foxes.
 :busy:
From what I know of Nogitsune, yes, that does mean "wild fox", but I commonly hear it to mean a fox that does not follow Inari. So then, I would think it would be possible for them to transcend simple "field fox" status and gain more tails.

Nogitsune can gain tails in every way that we can, even if not serving Inari.  There are lots of gods, and lots of ways to do a kind and charitable act, even when not serving Inari-sama.

Tamomo no Mae had 9 tails, and she didn't get a single one from serving the courts (unlike what White Wolf would like you to believe) o.o

Tails are a function of the gathering of energy over time so they are as likely to come from age as anything else.  However the Courts in my observation don't grant tails directly, meaning they don't have a bunch of tails in the back room they pin on you when they want to give you one.

What happens is they give you a great deal of energy, thus fast-forwarding the natural process of getting a new tail.

So would it be possible to start with more than one tail if you can conserve some energy from your prevorious life through reincarnation?

And then I still wonder if the mukti-tails have a physical manifestation...
