So… any of you out there who can feel your tails? XD  I'd like to compare some experiences with you a bit.

There has been something really spiritually surprising that's happened to me over the past month or so that I've been trying to process.  I've been waiting around to see if this is something that wasn't just a fluke, and even though it's only been about a month, I think that there might be something more to this.

You know how I've said that I don't really experience the "phantom limb" sensations that other therians / Otherkin can have?  Well… I don't know if this really counts, since it's different than what I've heard described, but I think this experience is similar to that.  Basically…I think I can feel three tails. XD

About a month ago, I was discovering stuff for my personal statement for grad school and figuring out that linguistics is something I really want to do and that maybe my path involves using programming to figure out sound changes in languages.  When I discovered this about myself, I remember standing up from my computer, and for the very first time I felt myself having three tails.  It wasn't like how I've heard things like it described by other therians / Otherkin though.  It was a very warm sensation on the back of my legs, and I felt three kind of "glowy" tails there.  Well… I say "glowy" even though I can't really "see" them, it was just that my mind sorta pictured them that way. It's really hard to describe, because I can't see them, but I know how they feel.  I also felt this sensation again one time walking into a Barnes and Noble after having a spiritual discussion with my brother too.  And lately, I've been able to sort of "feel" them there lately too, when I sit quietly and focus on them.  It isn't as strong as those first couple of times, but more and more it feels right.

The thing that's different though was that it was very pleasant. XD  Most who have had these kinds of sensations usually report them like "when someone scratches my head, my phantom ears feel weird" or "when I sit in a certain way, my tail kind of hurts."  I don't get a painful sensation when I sit in a chair or anything, my back is fine. I've tried to picture my tails when sitting down, and it's harder to "feel" them then when I'm laying down or standing up.  But, again, it's really more of a warm sensation than anything.

This actually gave me a real surprise. XD  I was like "Three tails? WHAT. SERIOUSLY? XD" I've had a strong conception of myself before as a regular silver fox, nothing particularly special really.  It was really confusing to suddenly have three tails there.

The more I've thought about over this time though… the less strange it is.  See, I've realized that when I would meditate and try to mentally picture myself as a fox, I would mostly picture my hands turning into paws, my head shaping into a sort of muzzle, and then picture myself running through whatever landscape I set up in my head.  I realized that I've never actually "felt" my tail(s) there before, ever.   I haven't really had any shapeshifting dreams for a long time either, and the ones that I've had were kinda fuzzy… no pun intended XD

Plus, I don't think it's a cameo shift or possession or anything like that, because I've mostly felt like myself this entire time.  In fact, I think I've been a bit happier lately, although that's mostly because of the holiday time, and because things have been looking up for me in my life lately.

What has mostly been on my mind a lot lately though is "why?"  What's the deal with three tails suddenly showing up?  When I first felt them, I was at a point where I felt like I was super close to drawing into a possible life's purpose.  So, I know that this was something IMPORTANT.  It certainly felt that way! XD  But, I wondered why THREE tails.  Two would make more sense, since I saw myself as only a one tail spiritually before.  But three? o.o

At first I thought that maybe I had two other past lives, which is why I've been diving so heavily into East Asian cultures.  I haven't really tried any form of past life regression though, and I'm actually a little nervous to do it.  Then, I thought it had to do with three significant experiences… and I can't think of the second one.  Again, two tails would've made more sense for that. XD

Recently though, I think I had an epiphany.  Thanks to my lovely mate, one of my early Christmas gifts was Lupa's "A Field Guide to Otherkin," which I'm almost done reading and I will share with you all later.  But, I got to the part about invoking your Otherkin self, and I thought about all the names I go by online for some reason, and then it hit me:

    I have three identities!

The first is my real life self, the self that my friends, family, and co-workers see.  Then, I have a furry/roleplaying self that use among another group of friends both online and in real life, and my furry stuff goes under that name.  And then there's Gingitsune, the name I've been starting to use for talking about my spiritual stuff.  My spiritual self has been with me for a while, but it's only recently that I've really "recognized" it as a separate thing and felt I'd needed to talk to others about it.

So, whether or not I'm "actually" a three tailed kitsune, this makes immense sense to me.  It's teaching me a valuable lesson, which is that my next challenge is trying to deal with these three selves.  At first it was just "my real self" and "my online self," and I managed to toggle between the two okay.  But now this spiritual self is coming to the forefront, and it's not solely a private thing anymore.   I was going to write in depth about this, but this is ALREADY a wall of text and I'll get to that issue another time.

But, do you think of your tails this way?  I know that gaining tails can be many things - significant experiences in your life/lives, being awarded them by deities (like Inari/Dakiniten), having gone through 100 years - but I've never seen the concept of different selves before.

I've always been able to feel my tails and ears. I can do so willing, sometimes they are just always there.

From what I noticed, everyone tends to have a unique experience with the phantom limbs and whatnot. I still can't get used to feeling my hears twitch when something makes noise behind me suddenly.

As for 3 tails, that's not really unusual. Tails are not that big of a mystery as they are claimed to be. They are a part of us :P.

As for multiple parts of yourself, you must remember they all are YOU. they all encompass who and what you are. When you think them as 'seperate' that's.... when complications arise.

I've never felt any pain from my tail with the phantom limb effect, so for me, the way you feel them sounds like the way I do. It's kinda odd, I guess. Unless I pay attention to them, I don't notice that I feel my ears or tail, like they're naturally always there, so much a part of me they don't need much notice. I mean, unless I point out your toes to you, you don't sit there feeling their every motion, or reminding you about your tongue or the feeling of your clothes against your skin.

I do feel my ears, however, when they try to move to catch a sound, mostly because my human ears will twitch and it'll pull from the top of my head all the way down in an odd fashion.

Yeah, I know it's not THAT unusual, it's just that it was unusual for myself.  Again, I had this very strong conception of myself as a regular fox, and then suddenly this happened, and it was very interesting to process.  But thanks though!

And yeah, thanks for the reminder!  I very much know that this is ALL me, and I don't really regard these parts of myself as separate personalities or anything.  It was just something that popped into my head, and it made sense to me.  It's been something of a conflict for myself, and I'm worried about who will know what (I.E. potential employers, etc) because all my experiences have blended together, like how my search for myself for a personal statement brought my more kitsune aspects to the forefront.  I've been doing very well at keeping these online selves distinct so far, and I just worry too much really. XD

I feel my ears and tails all the time. Unfortunately, sometimes it gets in the way of things. It bothers me to wear hats, though I collect them. And sitting down? Ugh. I often either sit on them or they get in the way, in which I can never get comfortable or I figit more than I usually figit.

Azn Am I the only one who automatically coils my tail up and around me when I go to sit down...? Also, I love hats, but I don't look good in them; I've got curly hair and a baby face, so hats make my head look huge... *sad face*

I feel my ears and tails all the time. And maybe that would explain my great sense of hearing too (Since my ears tend to always be out).
Not only can I feel them, I can see them energy wise, since I'm also super sensitive to seeing auras.

See, here's the thing.  I'm seeing a lot of responses of "I feel my ears and/or tail all the time"  and I don't really have that so much.  There was a good amount of time where I was feeling my tails a lot, like during the previous week, but then after that I really have to meditate on them to really feel that they are there.  Then again, maybe it's kind of like clothes - after a while, you adapt to them and don't feel every fiber against your being.

hmm... perhaps a side topic, but I've talked with a couple kitsune about this, though it really only applies to kitsune with multiple tails... if you have multiple tails, how do they attach to your body?

In explanation, I know a few kitsune who say they feel like they have one tailbone that all their tails connect to, others say they have a different one for each tail.

But the most common arrangement I've heard of for kitsune is three tailbones with three tails each.

    If this makes any sense.

heh, that's another one to add to the statistics ^^ My own tails appear to be attaching that way so far.

     Huh?
Well, I only feel them when I think about them...
And I can use two of them as sort of bits, then they take the shape of energy rings floating around my hands.
As for ears... Yeah, I can feel them when I think about them, and I do flick my ears in a vulpine manner.

But no, I've never felt uncomfortable or anything, nor can I feel them all the time.
Though I do sometimes do thinks like making sure my tail is out of the way after going through a door.

XD your not hte only one who automatically does that, it think it happens cause their so busy paying attention to the tails being out that they forget to move them naturally, think of it like sitting on your leg, if you sit on a certain part for example your ankle, on a hard floor your ankles will hurt so you learn to move a certain way naturally so it doesnt, and yet if you sit on something soft they wont hurt so you sit on them any ol way its a bit like that.

as for how tails attach well that always depends on the individual and sometimes breed of kitsune, some do some dont but just remember they all still attach to the spine XD think of it a bit like siamese twins, how each one is attached to another differently, thats basically what tails are like *shrugs*
